Hackmanite from the Mount Saint-Hilaire region of Quebec is a striking and highly sought-after fluorescent mineral known for its vivid response under ultraviolet light. In normal lighting, the mineral typically appears pale grey, whitish, or with subtle hints of lavender or light blue. However, when exposed to longwave UV light, hackmanite from this locality fluoresces a brilliant yellow-orange or orange-red, often sharply contrasting with associated minerals like nepheline or sodalite in the matrix. This intense and clean fluorescence makes it a favorite among collectors of fluorescent minerals.

Beyond its impressive glow, Mount Saint-Hilaire hackmanite is notable for its tenebrescence—the rare ability to reversibly change color when exposed to UV or sunlight. After being subjected to shortwave UV or strong sunlight, the hackmanite darkens to deep pink, violet, or purple tones, which slowly fade back to its original pale shade over time in the dark. Some specimens also exhibit mild phosphorescence, glowing faintly after the UV light source is removed. These dynamic optical properties, combined with the region's complex and unique geology, make hackmanite from Mount Saint-Hilaire both scientifically intriguing and visually captivating.
