Agoudal is one of the more dramatic recent iron meteorite discoveries — and one tied to genuine geological mystery. First identified near the village of Agoudal in Morocco's High Atlas Mountains in 2000, small fragments sat unrecognized for over a decade before a dealer confirmed the material as an iron meteorite in 2011. A systematic search the following year turned up an extraordinary strewn field, including a 60 kg mass buried half a meter underground; total recovered weight is now estimated at 100 kg or more.
Classified as a IIAB iron — a coarsest octahedrite group with the lowest nickel content of any iron meteorite class — Agoudal is composed of coarse kamacite with abundant schreibersite and rhabdite inclusions, and displays Neumann lines on etched surfaces. What makes Agoudal scientifically remarkable is its location: the strewn field sits atop Jurassic marly limestone bearing shatter cones, physical evidence of ancient impact shock. Researchers have documented this as one of the rare cases where a modern meteorite fall (dated to roughly 105,000 years ago) landed directly on the remnant of a much older impact structure — an association almost never seen in the geological record.
Individual pieces typically show sharp, torn edges and a rich natural patina, a legacy of the violent atmospheric breakup that scattered this iron across the Atlas foothills.
