Fulgurites form when a lightning strike delivers a massive, near-instantaneous discharge of heat (often exceeding 1,800°C) into sand or soil, fusing the grains along the current's path into a hollow, glassy tube. The vast, exposed dune fields of the Sahara make it one of the most productive regions in the world for fulgurite formation and recovery — the loose, well-sorted quartz sand found across the desert fuses cleanly under a lightning strike, and the region's frequent, powerful desert thunderstorms combined with minimal vegetation to intercept the strike mean fulgurites here tend to form in larger, more continuous, and often more elaborately branched specimens than are typically found elsewhere.

This piece shows the classic root-like, branching morphology fulgurites are known for, with a rough, sand-fused exterior and a hollow or partially hollow interior channel tracing the original lightning path.
