Gebel Kamil Meteorite – Large Shrapnel Fragment (Iron, IAB-MG)
This impressive Gebel Kamil meteorite specimen is a large shrapnel fragment from one of the most dramatic impact events ever documented in the Egyptian desert. Classified as an Iron, IAB-MG meteorite, it is composed primarily of a nickel-iron alloy with traces of cobalt, phosphorus, and other trace elements that mark it as an authentic relic of cosmic origin. These meteorites were ejected across the landscape when a massive iron body exploded in mid-air and impacted the Earth’s surface thousands of years ago, forming the famous Kamil Crater—discovered only recently in 2009.
This particular fragment exhibits the characteristic angular, torn-metal appearance typical of shrapnel pieces, with sharp edges and a rugged, metallic texture. The natural patina and iron sheen reveal a complex metallic structure, making it a striking display piece for any meteorite or planetary science collection.
Large Gebel Kamil fragments are becoming increasingly scarce, as most available specimens are small fragments or field-weathered pieces. This substantial shrapnel fragment stands out for both its size and preservation, offering collectors and researchers alike a tangible connection to an extraordinary impact event and to the raw metallic core material that once drifted through interplanetary space.
