This uraninite crystal comes from the Swamp #1 Quarry in Topsham, Maine, part of the pegmatite district that has long been a source of collectible uraninite in New England. The specimen measures approximately [size] and shows [description of form, e.g. a sharp octahedral habit / rounded crystal faces] with the dense black luster typical of the species.
Pegmatite-hosted uraninite like this formed during the late stages of granitic pegmatite crystallization, where uranium concentrated in the residual melt. Maine’s pegmatites are known for their diverse accessory mineralogy, and uraninite from the Topsham quarries makes a worthwhile addition to a regional suite or a broader collection of pegmatite minerals. Material from this locality is not commonly offered, and well-defined crystals are the exception.
Uraninite is radioactive. This specimen is low-level and safe for normal collecting, display, and handling, but store it in a closed container, wash hands after handling, and avoid creating dust.
