These small black uraninite crystals come from the Albion Lake area near Bancroft, in the heart of Ontario’s Grenville Province. The crystals are compact but distinct, with the dense black color and bright submetallic luster that make uraninite so easy to recognize. Small, well-defined crystals like these are a nice way to represent the species from a lesser-known locality in the district.

The Bancroft region was the centre of Canada’s uranium boom in the 1950s, and prospecting activity spread across the area, well beyond the handful of mines that became household names. Albion Lake is one of the smaller occurrences, and material with a specific locality label like this is not commonly seen. For collectors building a Bancroft-area suite, it fills a gap between the major mine names.

A good fit for a Canadian uranium collection, a systematic set of Bancroft-area localities, or anyone who enjoys the quieter corners of Grenville Province mineralogy.

Approx. specimen activity: 35000 CPM
