This is an exceptional and genuinely rare specimen from one of the most overlooked uranium localities in North America. The Four Corners district near Joplin, Missouri is not a name that appears often in uranium mineral literature — and that rarity is precisely what makes this piece so significant.
The specimen displays multiple discrete cubic uraninite crystals, the characteristic isometric habit of primary uraninite crystallizing from hydrothermal or pegmatitic fluids. Well-expressed crystal faces on uraninite are far less common than the massive botryoidal pitchblende forms most collectors encounter — finding them from a locality as unusual as Joplin elevates this piece considerably. The crystals are accompanied by a vivid gummite alteration suite in the secondary oxidation zones, providing both mineralogical contrast and visual interest.
A specimen with genuine scientific and display value. Missouri uranium material with this combination of features — crystallized primary uraninite, rich secondary gummite, and unusual provenance — is essentially impossible to replace. For the serious uranium mineral collector, this is the kind of piece that defines a collection.
