These black, lustrous uraninite crystals come from the Tripp Mine, also known as the Nu-Age Mine, one of the small historic uranium workings in the Bancroft district of Ontario’s Grenville Province. Crystallized uraninite from the area is a staple of any serious Canadian mineral collection, and this piece shows the dense, submetallic to pitchy luster the species is known for.
The Bancroft region was the centre of Canada’s uranium boom in the 1950s, when prospectors and small mining companies opened dozens of workings across the district. Most were short-lived and are long closed, which makes specimens with documented provenance from a named property like the Tripp worth having.
A good fit for a Canadian uranium suite, a pegmatite-focused collection, or a systematic set of uranium minerals.
