A superb, museum-quality specimen of Uraninite richly altering to Gummite from the historic Ruggles Mine in Grafton, New Hampshire. This remarkable piece features massive Uraninite with vivid orange, red, and ochre Gummite coatings that developed naturally through long-term oxidation. The color contrast between the dark uranium oxide core and the brilliant secondary alteration makes this specimen both visually striking and scientifically significant.
This material represents the classic uranium mineralogy for which the Ruggles Mine was once famous, before the site’s closure and restriction of collecting access. Today, authentic Ruggles Uraninite specimens are exceedingly rare — particularly pieces of this size, richness, and preservation. The old-collection provenance of this specimen ensures its authenticity and historical value, marking it as a true relic of early American pegmatite mineralogy.
This is exceptional, old-stock material that is no longer recoverable. Its combination of vivid coloration, mineralogical interest, and provenance make it worthy of display in any advanced collection or institutional exhibit. A perfect showcase of the natural alteration processes that transform Uraninite into its secondary oxide and silicate forms over time.
