Thucolite is a variety of uraninite intimately mixed with carbonaceous, hydrocarbon-rich material, giving it a dull to sooty black appearance quite different from crystalline uraninite. This specimen shows it together with pyrrhotite, the bronze-toned iron sulfide that sits alongside it in the host rock and adds metallic contrast.
The Agnew Lake Mine is a well-known Ontario uranium locality, and thucolite is one of its more interesting mineral products. Thucolite is a specialist species that does not turn up often in collections, and a piece with pyrrhotite makes a good representation of the association. This specimen also carries collector provenance, coming from the Eric Quinter collection, which adds a layer of history and documentation that is always valued by serious collectors.
A good choice for anyone interested in unusual uraninite varieties, Ontario uranium localities, or well-provenanced specimens from established collections.
