Euxenite from the Petaca district of Petaca is a dense, complex oxide rich in rare earth elements, yttrium, niobium, and titanium. Typically presenting as dark brown to black, submetallic masses or crystals, euxenite is prized for both its scientific importance and its association with granitic pegmatites known for producing REE-bearing species. Many specimens show characteristic metamictization—structural damage caused by internal radiation over geologic time—resulting in a somewhat resinous luster.
The Petaca pegmatite field is historically significant for its suite of niobium- and tantalum-bearing minerals. Euxenite from this locality is sought after by collectors specializing in pegmatite mineralogy, rare earth element species, or radioactive minerals.
