This Samarskite-(Y) specimen originates from the classic occurrences in Platte/Jefferson County, Colorado—well-known among collectors for producing robust, high-quality samarskite crystals enriched in yttrium and other rare-earth elements. Its deep black coloration, substantial density, and naturally blocky habit are hallmark traits of the species. This piece offers impressive mass and excellent mineralogical integrity, making it suitable for collectors building out an REE suite or those drawn to heavy, complex niobate minerals.
Colorado samarskite has become increasingly difficult to obtain in recent years, especially in well-preserved, unaltered form. The provenance adds significant value, as these localities represent some of the earliest studied American occurrences of REE-bearing niobate minerals. This specimen is ideal for both display and scientific reference, embodying the rugged mineralogy of Colorado’s historic pegmatite fields.
