This specimen features a well-formed single crystal of Thorianite from Amboasary Sud, Anosy Region, Madagascar. The crystal displays a sharp cubic habit with slightly rounded edges, characteristic of natural weathering from its original pegmatitic or placer matrix. It has a deep black color with a subtle submetallic to greasy luster, and exhibits excellent geometry for the species. Measuring [insert size], the crystal shows minimal matrix attachment and retains its integrity as a complete, floater-like example.
Thorianite is a rare thorium oxide mineral and a significant source of thorium, notable for its extreme radioactivity and high specific gravity. Madagascar is one of the classic localities for gem- and collector-quality thorianite crystals, and this piece is a textbook example. Crystals of this quality are uncommon, especially as standalone, complete cubes. Highly radioactive, this specimen is both a collector's prize and a striking representation of heavy element mineralization from Madagascar’s rich geological environment.
