This uraninite specimen comes from the Central City Mining District of Gilpin County, Colorado—one of the region’s classic uranium-bearing mining areas with a long history of producing well-crystallized primary uranium oxide. Rich, dense, and typically massive with a jet-black metallic sheen, this piece displays the characteristic heft and powerful radiometric response expected of high-grade uraninite.
Material from Central City is increasingly uncommon on the market, particularly in well-preserved form, as most historic workings have long been closed or reclaimed. This specimen is an excellent acquisition for collectors focused on uranium minerals, Colorado mining history, or systematic heavy-element mineralogy. It’s a standout reference piece that clearly demonstrates the defining properties of uraninite from one of Colorado’s most important historic districts.
