This specimen of Uraninite var. Pitchblende hails from the legendary Eldorado Mine, located in the remote Port Radium area along the shores of Great Bear Lake, Northwest Territories, Canada. Eldorado is one of the most historically significant uranium mines in the world—credited with producing the radium used by Marie Curie and, later, uranium for the Manhattan Project. This specimen presents a dense, black, sub-metallic mass typical of high-grade pitchblende. Under Geiger counter inspection, it responds as expected—exhibiting strong natural radioactivity consistent with primary uranium oxide minerals.

Pitchblende from Eldorado is highly sought after not only for its scientific and mineralogical value, but also for its connection to pivotal events in 20th-century history. These specimens are remnants of a deposit that shaped the early atomic age—steeped in both natural wonder and geopolitical importance. The Eldorado Mine operated in a rugged, isolated environment, and extracting these materials involved immense logistical effort, making every surviving specimen a true artifact of Canadian mining heritage. Many pieces like this were originally held in government, museum, or research collections, and only a limited number remain in private hands today.

This particular piece would be a valuable addition to any advanced mineral collection, especially those focused on uranium minerals, historical localities, or the Canadian Shield’s unique geology. Its provenance alone enhances its significance, but the aesthetic of the pitchblende—contrasting dark luster against matrix or mineral inclusions—makes it a visual centerpiece as well. Due to the specimen’s natural radioactivity, it should be stored safely and handled responsibly, making it most appropriate for knowledgeable collectors, institutions, or museums.
